Panasonic Equips Universities With Free Technology To Enable Easy Distance Learning For Students

  • 25 Universities or Professors to receive free production sets
  • 4K camera equipment and video content management system
  • Application runs via an online registration

Bracknell (UK), 8th April 2020 – With the complete shutdown of academic institutions around the world, e-learning is now taking place on an unprecedented scale. Universities have had to rapidly embrace the virtual delivery model and it is vital they have access to the right technology to aid success.

Panasonic has today announced that it has launched an initiative to equip 25 universities with its Lecture Capture solutions for free. The opportunity is open to all Universities across Europe. The Lecture Capture solution contains hardware and (cloud-based) software components that improve the learning experience and enables Universities and Colleges to easily provide their services to participants who are not studying on site.

Hilmar Salac, Head of Higher Education Solutions at Panasonic, commented: “We are now in exceptional times, where those who provide higher education courses are required to continue to deliver lectures to their students in an easy, stable and accessible way. It is vital at this time that everyone can avoid infection whilst keeping education alive and strong.”

“We hope that with this initiative, we may ease some of technological constraints and challenges some institutions and their students might be experiencing,” Salac continued.

Technical Details & Installation Requirements

The solution contains a minimum setup of a professional 4K remote camera and cloud based virtual central management system to enable distance learning in all its varieties. It enables institutions to run all classes remotely.

With this fully integrated solution, lectures can be recorded in Full HD and made available online as a digital version for playback or download. Webcasting is also a key feature, providing lecturers and presenters with an easy method to deliver live lectures and seminars with optional Q&A from the audience.

The Panasonic production kit includes:

  • A Professional 4K camera with IP control (AW-UE4)
  • Access to the Panopto video platform to publish and share videos
  • Pre-installation consultation and ongoing maintenance package

The 4K UE4 camera which can also be used for high-quality HD recording, features a 111° wide angle lens as well as an integrated stereo microphone for audio capture, making it perfect for capturing content in smaller spaces.

Presenters can also have professional head and shoulders shots for their tutorials or zoom into different parts of a demonstration. Up to 100 presets can be stored and recalled with the in-built web interface, giving the presenter the ability to easily jump to different parts of an image within a presentation. The UE4 can be connected and powered over USB to easily integrate with Panopto directly, as well as having LAN & HDMI connectivity.

With easy administration, scalable hosting, and a powerful video search, Panopto is a leading video content management system for higher education. The platform provides a secure portal to publish and share. It gives users the ability to search inside videos – indexing the speech and text on screen and enabling students to find and fast forward to any word they wish to find. It allows universities to track students learning efforts in real-time, so they can quickly monitor participation. The platform also supports interactive quizzing embedded into videos to test comprehension.
