Pioneering docking solutions for pioneering grocery giants
The world's largest dedicated online grocery supermarket, Ocado, is a vast, unique fulfilment and logistics machine powered by research and technology.
So when it wanted to refresh the technology used by the delivery drivers at the heart of its mobile operation, it turned to longstanding partner Panasonic for its latest Toughpad tablet and custom designed in-vehicle docking solution.
With the current Panasonic handhelds used by Ocado reaching end of life, the business was looking for a new rugged device that could meet its customer-focused requirements both today and into the future.
In addition, both the device and its vehicle dock needed to be robust enough to stand up to the busy schedule of Ocado's 2,000 strong fleet, which runs 6 days a week, up to 16 hours each day, with devices being inserted and removed from docks up to 50 times daily.
In other words, the docking solutions needed to be lightweight and compact, but hardwearing. They needed to be built to last.
Panasonic devices are designed with longevity and compatibility in mind. They can be engineered to work with legacy devices but are future proofed to cope with tomorrow’s innovations.
Use of off-the-shelf VESA plates, and a consistent choice of power leads and antennas for example, mean that our docking solutions are compatible with multiple-generational devices.
Add to that the technical support delivered throughout the docking solution’s lifetime from our ProServices specialist team of engineers and docking experts, and Ocado can look forward to complete end-to-end solutions that will last.
Long-term compatibility as standard
And it’s not just Ocado who are experiencing the long-term benefits of Panasonic’s docking solutions.
During the eight years that Panasonic Toughbook devices and docking solutions have been in place at Wales & West Utilities, the vehicle fleet has changed quite radically from heavily Vauxhall-focused to a mix of vehicle manufacturers.
However, each time a new model is chosen or a manufacturer changes the design of a new vehicle, the Panasonic ProServices team is able to adapt the design of the solution to fit.
"In fact, on many occasions the docking solutions have lasted so well that we are able to remove them and with a conversion kit simply reinstall them in new vehicles," he confirms.
