Herts Police reports Panasonic Toughpad tablets vital in modern crime fighting
Round the clock more than 3,400 police officers and staff work hard to provide a policing service to the public of Hertfordshire, supported by more than 400 Specials. The Constabulary polices an area of 632 square miles, with a population of well over a million. The mix of villages and towns, with some of the busiest roads in Europe, places a variety of demands on the force.
The latest Panasonic Toughpad tablets, deployed in 120 police cars in Hertfordshire with 50 more units soon to be installed, are revolutionising policing in the county by effectively providing officers access to a mobile police station.
“The feedback has been staggering,” said Detective Chief Inspector Damien Kennedy. “Officers are telling us that this is the best piece of technology for policing in the past 10 years. We are overwhelmed with anecdotal stories about how the device has helped find missing people with dementia, retrieve stolen vehicles and fight crime.”
The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 is playing a starring role in the latest crime busting Vauxhall police cars in Hertfordshire. The fully rugged touchscreen tablet with Windows 8 Pro can be used on the move or docked into the glove box of the vehicles.
Hertfordshire Constabulary was the first force to make use of the ground breaking technology, which offers everything officers could want from a mobile police station. Using the tablet, officers can securely access command and control systems, carry out database checks as well as access all their desktop applications for email, web and the intranet.
“Our mission is to provide officers with real-time information at the point of need, so they can make faster and more informed decisions than ever before and many of these decisions can be life-changing for members of the public or the officers themselves,” said DCI Kennedy, the project manager for mobile data.
“There is no doubt that we are seeing the business and community benefits of these devices. They improve our access to information, which improves our crime intelligence and arrest rates. They also make our officers more visible by enabling them to be in the community for more of the time.”
The Panasonic Toughpad tablet roll-out began with a technology trial working closely with Vauxhall to install just 10 devices in police cars, which then caught the eye of Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May when they visited. The project has now been so successful that the tablets have been installed in 120 vehicles, including traffic and community police, as well as specialist teams such as the armed response and dog units.
As well as the Panasonic Toughpad tablets, the cars also feature an 8.4-inch high resolution, multi-touch touchscreen monitor developed by KME and a 4G compatible broadband router enabling high-speed internet connectivity up to 100 yards from the vehicle.
This technology enables the police to deploy Automatic Number Plate and facial recognition technology.
“The Toughpad tablets and related technology are enabling us to help the community and prevent and detect crime in ways that have never been possible before,” concluded DCI Kennedy.
Police and Crime Commissioner David Lloyd has also praised the introduction of the Panasonic Toughpad tablets. “I am delighted to see the results of our investment in new technology. I believe that by investing in people, and in the kit in their pockets and vehicles, and by ensuring that we have fewer but better police stations and offices, we can deliver radical savings, whilst protecting the future of local policing.”
The Toughpad FZ-G1 is Panasonic’s first fully rugged Windows 8 Pro tablet, which has been designed for mobile workers who spend much of their time working outside or in vehicles. The thin and lightweight device, weighing only 1.1kg, has been designed to take full advantage of the new functionality offered by the Windows 8 Pro operating system and offers two-way touch input with its capacitive 10-finger multi-touch screen and digitizer pen for tasks such as recording signatures.
The first fully rugged device to use the latest IPSα Panel technology, developed by Panasonic, the device provides new levels of viewing quality for tablet users working outside. Offering extra wide viewing angles, strengthened glass, high contrast ratio and 800cd/m² high brightness paired with a Panasonic anti-reflection layer, the 10.1” over Full HD (1920x1200) Resolution screen is purpose built to perform in any light conditions.
The Toughpad family is designed to meet the same incredible durability standards as Panasonic’s Toughbook laptop product line. The Toughpad FZ-G1 tablet has a MIL-STD-810G rating for 120cm drops as well as an IP65 ingress protection rating for resistance to dust and water. The device is also rated for use in extreme temperatures.
With built-in battery saving technology such as its ambient light sensor, the Toughpad FZ-G1 can operate for 8.0 hours on its standard 6-cell battery and with an optional 9-cell battery can run for 16 hours.
